Shunji Omura

Shunji Omura was born in Itami city, JAPAN in 1962. When he was 5 years old he went to New York for 3 and half years. On the way back to Japan from New York, he stopped by Venice where he had a chance to visit glass studios in Murano. The glass sculpture “Fisherman” that his father purchased there became a lead for Shunji to enter the world of glass. After high school Shunji attended Tokyo Glass Art Institute. After that he entered Post Graduate courses and started studies on sculpture using glass material. After graduating he moved to England where he visited studios in London, Sunderland, Jersey Island, and worked for Midsummer Glass Maker in Cambridge. There, he learned several methods of glass blowing and experienced a work flow called “Production Work”. After returning from Cambridge he became a staff member at Niijima Glass Art Center where he was lucky to work as an assistant for Dale Chihuly, Benjamin Moore, Dante Marioni, Richard Royal, Richard Marquis, Dan Dailey, Lino Tagliapietra, and William Morris. After leaving Niijima in 1994 Shunji established Omura Glass Studio outside of Tokyo.
